Only in the Triangle

August 24, 2008 · Leave a Comment

If you happen to be one of the fortunate few who tune in to 106.1 in the Raleigh-Durham area, you probably noticed a familiar voice hosting his own show on Thursday evenings.  It’s one of those things that is so funny you couldn’t make it up even if you tried.  That spot on the dial has gone way downhill since its halcyon days as the big, bad rocker 106-1RDU.  At least one of its former jocks still has a job in the area.

[By the way, that other link might contain some stuff that is NSFW.  Just so you know.]

Boy, am I feeling old

August 20, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Just today, I came across two things on the Web that remind me just how far into fogeydom I’m getting.  Beloit College in Wisconsin has released yet another Mindset List for the incoming Class of 2012.   And once again, I find myself complaining how today’s youth seem to have it so easy.  Okay, granted there were some advances over the years that made certain aspects of life more manageable.  I’ve gotten so used to being a Facebook junkie over the past year, that I wondered how I ever got along without it.  Especially when it comes to tracking down long-lost friends from days gone by.  At least it helps me relive “the good ‘ol days” sans the awkward moments.

On an somewhat unrelated note, Herald-Sun sportswriter Frank Dascenzo announced he’s hanging it up after a long, storied career.  He had been with the company for nearly four decades, which seems like forever on my part.  My first exposure to the Sports Page was one of Frank’s columns in the Durham Sun (which used to be the evening paper, by the way).  While I can’t quite remember exactly what it was, I did manage to keep up with his musings on all things sports over the years.  At least I liked him much better than that insufferable Mickey McDork from the “Noise & Disturbance”.  Oh well, another chapter of my past fading away. Frank, if you’re reading this, just wanted to say you will be missed …

And for those of you who don’t believe Durham at one time had two newspapers, we also had two school systems (city and county).  Like the newspapers, the school systems also came together, albeit it was quite complicated.  Now you know how old I really am.

New associate blog

August 5, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Sorry I haven’t contributed to the blog in a while.  I’ve been busy putting together my latest project, which is my new associate blog – Jimmy’s ACC Pigskin Picks.  It’s more or less a spin-off of a blog series I did last year when I made my picks for every single ACC football game last year (including the bowl games).  Well, I happened to enjoy it so much, I decided to do it again this year.  Only I decided to veer slightly off course and introduce a more dedicated blog that focuses solely on ACC football, among other things.  There’s still about three-and-a-half weeks to go before the season starts, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t check it out now.  Just make sure to bookmark it on your web browser, since I’ll be updating it on a regular basis.  Thanks!
